I.M. Systems Group, Inc. (IMSG) www.imsg.com is currently seeking to hire a highly motivated Ecosystem Support Scientist/Scientific Analyst (for High-Resolution SST Product Development) to support the NOAA Coral Reef Watch (CRW, see http://coralreefwatch.noaa.gov) program in Silver Spring, MD. CRW is a component of NOAA’s Coral Reef Conservation Program (CRCP), which supports effective management and sound science to preserve, sustain and restore valuable coral reef ecosystems, and NOAA/NESDIS Center for Satellite Applications and Research (STAR), which is designing a collaborative environment for algorithm development and applications research based on data from satellite remote sensing. This position supports a 4-year collaborative project with NASA Ames Research Center and the University of South Florida (USF). This is a 4-year term position with two duty stations in Silver Spring, MD (primary location, 9-11 months per year), and Mountain View, CA (secondary location, 1-3 months per year).
Duties:
• Support NOAA CRW, NASA, and USF scientists in developing the methodology, algorithm theoretical basis, and systems for a global coastal high-resolution sea surface temperature (SST) product suite.
• Implement existing algorithms to process long term data record into climate quality datasets.
• Develop and implement product validation techniques and methodologies.
• Develop, test, and evaluate an integrated decision support system (DSS) allowing coral reef managers to effectively monitor conditions conducive to mass coral bleaching.
• Develop and implement data quality assurance systems and procedures.
• Disseminate results to the scientific and user community through online DSS tools, publications, and conferences.
Travel is required for 1-3 months each year to NASA Ames (California) for training and collaboration.
Qualifications:
• Required Qualifications:
• M.S. degree in physical sciences, earth sciences, engineering, oceanography, remote sensing, mathematics, computer science and/or any other relevant degree.
• Demonstrate sound knowledge base of environmental remote sensing.
• Strong software skills in IDL/Matlab and/or C/Fortran are preferred.
• Strong skills in satellite remote sensing data processing and analysis are desired.
• Physics, mathematics, and/or statistics background/experience is desired.
• Excellent communication skills, including writing and presentation, are desired.
• Ability to work well individually and cooperatively with a range of individuals. Desired Qualifications:
• Experience with satellite sea surface temperature data.
• Experience with developing and validating algorithms for processing satellite data.
• Experience with applying remotely-sensed data to environmental problems.
